Speech 1 (Lone Wolf)

Dry Dry Run Speech Outline:

My Best Advice: The best advice that I think I gave during our peer review session on Friday was to Bernie. This advice was the really good explanation that he had about his change in attitude towards school, once realizing things weren’t working out the way he anticipated, and showing that change in his speech. He also shows the complete change he is trying to make towards academics, which I highlighted. I told him that if he was going to highlight this change he needs to show the audience what the steps he is taking are and what those changes are going to do for him academically.

Why It’s My Best Advice: I think this was my best advice just due to the amount of material that his speech gave me to work with. He had a really good starting draft for his speech, and being able to see where he is starting is helpful. I think this advice was also helpful because it showed that what he has is good but can increase in many different ways to become an even better speech.

Best Advice From My Peers: This advice came from everyone that I presented my speech to. They all highlighted how cool it was that even though I am currently progressing on to medical school, I still find things that I need to work on and showing the goals that I have. But to work on I need to pick specific information to highlight on, because there is so much there and now I need to pick the perfect stuff to expand and work on.

Why It’s Their Best Advice: I really liked all of this information from my peers because it helped me see what was too much and what wasn’t talked about enough. It helps me see where I want to go, going forward, and how I can make these points come across. Being able to see that what I have works, but showing what I can do better is really helpful.

Journal 7 (Dry Dry Run Reflection):  After the dry dry run that we did I am feeling really good about where I am going with this speech. The feedback I got from my peers was super helpful in helping me understand where I want to go. They let me know what was too much and what wasn’t enough and how I can progress on these pieces to make my speech really easy to understand and get through to the class. The idea of me trying to improve myself while still going forward in my educational career was really highlighted by everyone. But there is a lot going on in my speech so I need to find ways to expand upon the things that I want to do to go farther in order to show what I will be doing to pursue a better academic career for myself. I now know exactly what to do to make sure that I get the things across to the audience that are necessary.

Journal 8 (Dry Run Reflection): Last class I gave my dry run presentation to the class. And to be honest, this felt way better for me than the dry dry run did, I think because I finally realized what I wanted to talk about in my speech, from listening to my classmates speeches and taking notes. But there are definitely a bunch of things that I could work on to make sure that the real deal speech is much better. The feedback that I got from class was really helpful. The positive feedback that I got was really helpful, just knowing and feeling confident in myself was a lot of the information that I heard. But also the things to work on that my classmates told me were things that I knew needed to be fixed. For my entire life, I have been told I am a fast talker. Whether it be in a regular conversation or a presentation of some kind. I always talk really fast, and for some people that works for them to understand and comprehend what I am saying but for others it is so hard because my words are going by the so fast. This critique I have gotten for years and I have learned how to speak slower, and personally I thought I was talking really slow but looking back on the video that really isn’t the case. So making sure that I am completely conscious of my speed and pace is really important. Another thing that I need to work on, from critiques and rewatching my video, is to make sure I have information to back up what I am saying. All of the points are there and the ideas are there but now I need to show why they are there and why this type of prompt means something to me.

Journal 10 (Final Reflection): Today I finished up my Lone Wolf Speech, our first project of the semester. This project has been really hard for me, more than any of the other speeches I did in public speaking. I really had a hard time coming up with a way to create something that everyone would be able to relate to and would like, in terms of my speech itself. But more than that I was so worried to explain the decreased areas within my transcript during this speech, since I talked about my academic self. I think that this was what made it so much scarier for me, but besides that I think this project went really well. The outlines were so easy for me to come up with, thanks to the practice of public speaking. The peer review was so helpful, from the people in my dry-dry run group to our big dry run group. Everyone gave me tings I knew I needed to work on, and helped me see where my strengths and weaknesses were in this speech. And now that it is over I hope that I was able to apply each of those comments within the speech that I gave today. I think in the future, what I am going to make away from this project, is that everyone in this class is there for one another, and we all are trying our bests to make sure we each put out the best speeches possible. Another thing I will use in the future, that I learned from this project, is to be as confident in myself and my experiences. No one will judge you because just going up in front of the class is something that takes guts and confidence, and so anything you talk about just backs that up. Overall I had fun with the project, learning from the other speeches and peer review.
