Journal Entries:
Journal: In Class #1: During this very dry run of the speech, there were lots of things missing within my outline but this speech it is about something personal so it is much easier to ad-lib when dong this dry run. When listening to the feedback at the end of both of the group runs, I see when I need to go with the outline and understanding of my speech. I know what I want to talk about with the person I am presenting on, but now it is the time to just add those extensions to the outline and my practice runs. The ideas that I have now are working, but it is just an extension of those thoughts and being able to express the feelings about my person will be the most important. Overall I think just adjusting what I want to say, and having that highlighted in my outline will be important to the overall flow. Being able to have this opportunity to talk out the kinks and awkward pauses now will help us all create a better speech when we present in the coming weeks.
Journal: What Needs To Happen? #1: I think I am going to follow to form I am taking now, with the ideas of an introduction, body and conclusion of the speech. This outline and idea direction makes the most sense to me, and my writing style, and fits the type of speech that I want to present to the class. The ideas and anecdotes that I want to expand upon I think will be the best parts of my speech, and having those will add much more depth to the understanding of why this person means so much to me. I think the challenges for me as of now is deciding what information will enhance my speech, and what will bog it down. When writing about a person close to you, it is hard to decide which stories or parts about them are important and influential to you. They are special people so just deciding what those will be have been hard. My next steps is actually creating a good outline that will help me create that 4-5 minute speech for class on Friday, deciding what I want to say is now what I am going through, and weeding out the unimportant things. To elevate my speech I think just making it personal and making sure the things I talk about will resonate with the class.
Journal: In-Class #2: During our dry run, I got a lot of good feedback about the speech and about where to go and what works within this speech. The use of stories, from the past and then now and how they relate. The overall feedback was that the stories were working within my main ideas and they flowed with the understanding of what I am trying to convey with my speech. I think my next steps are just redrafting and highlighting the importance of my person more, maybe creating more of main thesis about what the person means to me and show that with the story examples and examples of who he is as a person. I think that creating the main point to highlight the importance of the person will be beneficial to the overall connection and audience connection to my speech.
Journal: What Needs to Happen? #2: What I need to do to prepare for my presentation on Friday is to finalize those last minute details and stories into my speech, giving it more heartfelt understanding and showing exactly what my person means to me. I think I also wanted to add an overarching theme that is shadowed within the whole speech, showing the purpose this person has on my life, without them just being someone of importance or family to me. I think with these few corrections and critiques I can really excel my speech into something that will show the significance of my person on me and my life. In the presentation aspect of the speech I think I need to become more confident in understanding that I know exactly what I am talking about and to not rely so heavily on my outline, I have had this problem with all of my speeches, but it has progressed to me using it less and less each time. I think that with a bit more practice I can be pretty much go without looking down at the outline as much as I did during the dry run.
Journal: Reflection as a Whole: After finishing the Speech 3 project and presentation in class on Friday, I think that it went really well. I used the outlines given to us in class to make sure I was hitting every mark, and made sure that my speech would fit within the requirements of this project. This speech was a weird one for me, I thought it was easier to do because it was about someone that I really cared about however I also had a harder time making sure my outline and speaking points were perfect. Even though my person would not be there for this presentation of the speech, I still felt like I was presenting it to them and wanted it to be as perfect as possible, but I think this was something that everyone was feeling. I still struggled with the pacing of my speech when I presented it on Friday, I naturally talk very fast and being put in a public speaking setting that fast-paced speech really comes out of me. But I was proud of myself for not stuttering over my words, so I can see that improvement. I think the thing I truly need to focus on during the next speech will be my talking speed, and being able to go slower. Overall, I do think that this was quite a confident speech and is giving me the perfect progression on the way to the final speech.
